Lead engineers are expected to understand the following:
- How to calculate standard fire resistance rating for unexposed steel columns.
- The basics of the ASTM E119 and UL 1709 fire curves.
- The basic principles of correlating the combustible loading to burnout and determine if the fire barrier is acceptable.
- Understand the different building types as defined in the IBC.
- Understand the different types of passive barriers (walls, barriers, etc.) as defined in Chapter 7 of the IBC.
- Understand IT&M requirements.
- Have a basic understanding for how to calculate fire rating for wood or concrete members.
